Why We Turn Down Some Jobs

Saying no to work sounds bad for business. It is the main reason our callback rate has stayed where it is.

We turn down a handful of jobs every year, and almost always for one of three reasons.

The three reasons

Almost always it is one of three:

  • A roof that does not need replacing. If a repair will carry it another five years we will say so, even though the repair is worth a fraction of the replacement

  • A deck that is unsafe to work on until structural work has been done by someone qualified to do it

  • A schedule that cannot be met properly, usually late in the season when the cold stops the adhesive strips from sealing

None of those are difficult conversations to have on the driveway. They are very difficult to have a year afterwards.

What we say instead

Turning a job down is rarely the end of the conversation. More often it is a repair quote, a date later in the year when the weather will cooperate, or the name of the structural engineer who needs to look at the deck first.

A few of those come back to us as replacements two or three years later, which is roughly the point.

Why it is arithmetic, not principle

Turning work away is not a principle we invented, it is arithmetic. A roof fitted badly comes back, and it comes back at our expense.

Every job we take on is one our own crew can finish properly inside the window we quoted.
